She nodded, suddenly nervous about seeing her mother. She loved the women dearly, but sometimes she could come on strong. She just hoped it wasn't about to become a round of 21 questions. "Yes.. lets.." she said trying to keep her voice as even as possible.

Nephrite shrugged and walked beside her down the sidewalk. "What's on the menu?" he asked. He hadn't eaten in several hours and all that had awaited him at home was some instant ramen.

She shook her head. "Knowing my mother, it could be anything." She said with a short laugh. Her mother wasn't the type to follow any set pattern. She was a spontanous women to the core.

"Well whatever it is, its bound to be better then instant noodles." he said. He did not appear nervous at all, his social skills were not the greatest and he did not seem to understand that making a good impression tonight was in his favor. This was going to prove to be an interesting evening.

The walk to Ami's mother's apartment was a short one and Ami found herself staring at the door a few seconds longer than she should have been? Its not like Ami's love life depended on this dinner. She sighed softly before opening the door and walking inside glanced back at Nephrite quickly. "Mama?"

Nephrite stood behind Ami in the door way. He had a rather neutral expression on his face. He looked around the place and found it was neat and orderly. He eye caught some movement and he fixed his gaze on a middle aged woman who had appeared at Ami's summons. She was smiling and he could tell instantly that this was Ami's mother.

Ami glanced at her mother and tried to put her most convincing smile on. From the state of her mother's dress she'd been hard at work in the kitchen. Goodie. Ami's mother came over to her daughter a smile on her face. "Why hello stranger." She said with a good natured tone and pulled Ami into a hug. She however glanced at Nephrite over Ami's shoulder, her eyes narrowing.

Nephrite met her gaze squarely and sensed she was suspicious of him. He stood there silently and waited for her to make the first move.

Ami could feel the tension in the room rising and she closed her eyes. All she needed was a fight between the two, that would really help cement her choice in guys for her mother. She pulled away from her mother after a few moments. "Mama.. do.. do I smell something burning?" She asked softly as her mother's eyes widened. "My casaroll" She smiled and darted back into the kitchen to which Ami breathed a sigh of releif. "Think you can do me a favor?" She asked Nephrite softly as she turned to him.

His eyes followed her mother's form till it disappeared in the kitchen, a frown forming on his face now. He looked over Ami and for the first time began to feel he was in for more then just dinner. "What do you need?"

She sighed softly. Usagi should have kept her mouth shut. "I need you to try and not edge my mother on. The last thing I want right now is a fight between you two." She said with a frown. "And next time we see Usagi...I don't know what I'm gonna do to her yet. But I promise you... she's not gonna like it." She said as her mother came back out with a frown. "So.. my dinner plans didn't work out.. what.. do you kids want?" She asked glancing at Nephrite again, but not so supiciously this time.

Nephrite waited a moment before responding and said, "I eat anything." He was going to have to be on his best behavior he suddenly realized. That was easier said then done.

Ami sighed softly, it barely noticeable as her mother started yet another staring contest with Nephrite. Both seemed eager to show the other that they wouldn’t be backing down. It was almost like watching to people play chicken. Neither was willing to back down and submit to the other and that could in the end be a problem. If Ami didn’t do something soon, they’d never start off on the right foot so to speak. Slowly Ami pulled away from her mother and placed a hand lightly on Nephrite’s shoulder, almost as if she was trying to keep him grounded and in-check.
While she and her mother conversed about what to order in, Ami regarded her mother with a careful gaze. She was trying her hardest to keep herself together for the sake of not tipping her mother’s suspicion. At the moment Nephrite was ‘just a friend’ and Ami for the moment wanted to keep it that way. No sense in throwing Nephrite to the wolves yet. They argued for a few minutes over what they should get to eat, playful banter that Ami had missed. Her mother was gone far to often nowadays it seemed. “Why not order from the restraunt on main?” she inquired as her mother made some remark that made Ami laugh. They continued on for a few minutes like this before they finally decided.

Nephrite stayed silent throughtout the exchange between Ami and her mother. He was slightly amused by the somewhat firm hand that was on his shoulder still, telling him to keep his cool no doubt. Oddly enough he could not recall anyone ever having that effect on him before. His ususally sour expression was now one of partial amusement as he continued to watch Ami.

Ami had won the argument of where they were going to eat and had volunteered herself and Nephrite to go pick it up. Anything to get out of the house. So where they were walking down the busy streets of Tokyo.
